Proper installation of a diesel generator set is critical to ensure stable operation, safety, and extended service life. Whether for industrial, commercial, or marine use, following the correct installation standards is essential. This article will walk you through the installation requirements and step-by-step procedures for diesel generator sets.
Before installing a diesel generator set, the generator room and foundation must meet the following requirements:
Clearance Space: Keep at least 1 meter of space around the generator for maintenance and ventilation. The radiator side should have a ventilation window sized according to the radiator core.
Foundation: Build the generator base on compacted hard ground, then pour a 200mm thick concrete slab. The surface must be flat and slip-resistant.
Ventilation & Temperature: Ensure proper ventilation in the room. The ambient temperature should not exceed 40°C.
Exhaust System: The exhaust pipe diameter must not be smaller than the diesel engine’s exhaust outlet. Avoid more than 3 pipe bends, and each bend should be greater than 90°. Exhaust pipes must be independently supported to avoid stress on the silencer or turbocharger.
Grounding: Proper grounding is mandatory. Use a copper plate buried deep in the ground to ensure good grounding resistance.
Fire Safety: Fire extinguishers and other fire protection tools must be available inside the generator room.
Ensure the following items are in place before proceeding with installation:
Complete construction drawings and technical documentation;
Civil work completed and doors/windows sealed;
Outdoor installations must have waterproof protection;
Foundation, anchor bolt holes, cable ducts, and trenches must meet design specs;
Installation site should be clean, with clear access for personnel and equipment;
Unpacking inspection: Verify all components and accessories using the packing list. Check the generator, accessories, tools, spare parts, and technical documents. Inspect for a nameplate, paint damage, and factory test certificates.
Conduct a thorough site inspection and create a detailed transport, hoisting, and installation plan based on actual site conditions.
Use proper lifting equipment and slings based on the generator’s weight. Ensure qualified personnel perform the lifting while electrical staff assist with positioning.
Use steel shims or wedges to level the unit. Tighten anchor bolts only after leveling is complete. If wedge irons are used, weld them together to prevent movement.
Includes installation of:
Fuel System: Day fuel tank with level sensor and float switch, pipelines, oil pump system, and valves. Must follow standard installation codes.
Cooling System: Radiator, piping, coolant heater, and water pump. Choose between radiator cooling or heat exchanger system depending on site conditions.
The exhaust system typically includes pipes, mufflers, and fittings:
Weld the supplied flange to the exhaust pipe;
Fix the air duct and insulation materials as per design;
Use clamps to support the muffler, elbows, and pipes — ensuring tight seals at each joint;
Horizontal exhaust pipes must be connected firmly to muffler outlets;
Use a flexible hose (bellows) between the generator and exhaust pipe to avoid vibration stress;
Do not allow the weight of the exhaust system to rest on the flexible pipe;
Install an emission purifier if required for environmental compliance.
The air outlet at the radiator end should be 1.2 to 1.5 times larger than the radiator’s effective area;
Airflow direction of inlet and outlet must match to prevent overheating;
Install protective screens and insulation for cold climates;
Regularly clean radiator fins and intercoolers, especially in dusty or oily environments;
Check coolant level frequently and apply anti-corrosion agents if needed.
Control Panel: For small units, the control box is mounted directly on the set; large units use a separate control panel installed on the floor or in a control room;
Wiring and conduit must comply with cable tray and distribution panel standards;
Ensure correct and firm connections between the generator and the control cabinet;
Phase sequence must match the original power system;
Neutral wire must be connected with proper grounding conductors and bolts;
All accessible metal parts must be bonded to the PE (protective earth) or PEN conductor.
Before load connection, perform a no-load test:
Disconnect the load side breaker or ATS;
Set the control switch to “Manual” mode and press the start button;
Check generator voltage, battery voltage, and frequency — adjust if needed;
Monitor engine oil pressure to ensure it’s within the normal range.
